But the journey wasn’t easy.
He started from scratch, buying the bags, handbags and bags of his own from a collection of Japanese-owned vendors.
Then, after a year of trial and error, he had a working product and he set up shop in Japan.
“I think I had to learn all the skills that I would need to be successful,” Mr Lee said.
“That’s the hard part.
I had no idea what I was doing and how to do it, and I had nothing to show for it.”
His business model, which has now expanded to include handbags as well as accessories, has brought him a lot of support from people like former US President Jimmy Carter, former Prime Minister Tony Abbott and US Senator Bernie Sanders.
Mr Lee has had to make some tough decisions, but he is proud of the way he has handled it all.
“There’s a lot that I’ve learnt about business from my travels, I think, and the people that I meet in the US,” he said.

Mr Lee is also happy with the response he’s had to the Saks brand.
He says he has seen an enormous increase in sales of the brand’s handbags in the past two months.
The brand has sold over 50,000 handbags over the past year, and it has been praised for its affordable, minimalist look.
Mr Lee says the SAK brand has been a “game changer” for him, and he hopes to keep growing and supporting it.
He says he is pleased that so many people are now using the brand as an investment, rather than as a “business card”.
Saks, however, says it is not the answer to his success.
It is also important to note that the Sak brand does not have a long history in the shoe business.
Balenciagar is a brand with an almost 20-year history and is a luxury shoe brand owned by Saks.
This is not a new problem for Mr Lee.
A few years ago, the founder of Balenucciaga, Nicole Lee, sold her company to American luxury shoe chain Zara for $4 billion.
Ms Lee has been in the media for decades, and has become a star in the fashion industry.
Her company has been the biggest seller in the world of handbags since 2007.
Zara has said it will not touch the brand in any way, shape or form.
But Balencinagas was able to grow a large following among women who wanted a minimalist shoe for a budget.
In 2012, the company introduced its first collection, which included a range of shoes in a range that cost between $100 and $400.
Over time, it grew into an entire collection, but this year, Mr Lee decided to bring the brand back to its roots, with an eye to becoming more of a luxury brand.
When Mr Lee first started his new business, he said it was just another “sport”.
But over time, he realised the brand was much more than a sport.
Now, he has invested in the brand through investments in its supply chain, and also through the marketing of the BalenCiagas handbags.
His goal is to have a brand that is a “brand that is accessible to people who don’t have the means to own one”, he said, adding he would continue to sell the brand and invest in marketing.
As a result, Mr Lee hopes the company will continue to grow.
With the company’s new portfolio of handbag options, Mr Lec is confident the brand will continue.
