The sales of handbags at an outdoor market near the Washington Monument in the capital, D.C., last month drew hundreds of shoppers, a record number, with most spending between $100 and $200, according to online records.
The outdoor market, in the middle of the city, sold out of handbag sets during the month of March.
The sales topped out at 6,300 sets, with more than $1 million in sales, according in online records maintained by the Metropolitan Police Department and the National Association of Handbag Dealers.
The sales were the largest outdoor market in the country during the year, said a spokesman for the Metropolitan Bureau of Police.
Handbags at the outdoor market include $100- and $150-handbags, and some $100 handbags from the new generation of high-end designer brands.
The sets ranged in price from $3,800 to $15,500, according online records and a person familiar with the sales.
The indoor market sold out handbags for a week or so, the person said.
Handbags at both stores were among the top sellers at the indoor market.
The Metropolitan Police did not say how many of the outdoor sales were in Washington, but the records from the Metropolitan Office of Consumer Affairs and the Metropolitan District showed that the market in May sold out at least six times.
